Two years of community college free for responsible students in HEMINGWAY SOUTH CAROLINA

The President unveiled a new proposal: Make two years of community college free for responsible students across America.

In our growing global economy, Americans need to have more knowledge and more skills to compete -- by 2020, an estimated 35 percent of job openings will require at least a bachelor's degree, and 30 percent will require some college or an associate's degree. Students should be able to get the knowledge and the skills they need without taking on decades' worth of student debt.

The numbers:

If all 50 states choose to implement the President's new community college proposal, it could:

  • Save a full-time community college student $3,800 in tuition per year on average
  • Benefit roughly 9 million students each year

Under President Obama's new proposal, students would be able to earn the first half of a bachelor's degree, or earn the technical skills needed in the workforce -- all at no cost to them.

The requirements:

  • What students have to do: Students must attend community college at least half-time, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and make steady progress toward completing their program.
  • What community colleges have to do: Community colleges will be expected to offer programs that are either 1) academic programs that fully transfer credits to local public four-year colleges and universities, or 2) occupational training programs with high graduation rates and lead to in-demand degrees and certificates. Community colleges must also adopt promising and evidence-based institutional reforms to improve student outcomes.
  • What the federal government has to do: Federal funding will cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college. Participating states will be expected to contribute the remaining funds necessary to eliminate the tuition for eligible students.

Expanding technical training programs:

President Obama also proposed the new American Technical Training Fund, which will expand innovative, high-quality technical training programs across the country. Specifically, the fund will award programs that:

  • Have strong employer partnerships and include work-based learning opportunities
  • Provide accelerated training
  • Accommodate part-time work

Filing A Charge of Discrimination on HEMINGWAY SOUTH CAROLINA

If you believe that you have been discriminated against at work because of your race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information, you can file a Charge of Discrimination. All of the laws enforced by EEOC, except for the Equal Pay Act, require you to file a Charge of Discrimination with us before you can file a job discrimination lawsuit against your employer. In addition, an individual, organization, or agency may file a charge on behalf of another person in order to protect the aggrieved person´s identity. There are time limits for filing a charge.

Note: Federal employees and job applicants have similar protections, but a different complaint process.

If you file a charge, you may be asked to try to settle the dispute through mediation. Mediation is an informal and confidential way to resolve disputes with the help of a neutral mediator. If the case is not sent to mediation, or if mediation doesn´t resolve the problem, the charge will be given to an investigator.

If an investigation finds no violation of the law, you will be given a Notice of Right to Sue. This notice gives you permission to file suit in a court of law. If a violation is found, we will attempt to reach a voluntary settlement with the employer. If we cannot reach a settlement, your case will be referred to our legal staff (or the Department of Justice in certain cases), who will decide whether or not the agency should file a lawsuit. If we decide not to file a lawsuit, we will give you a Notice of Right to Sue.

In some cases, if a charge appears to have little chance of success, or if it is something that we don´t have the authority to investigate, we may dismiss the charge without doing an investigation or offering mediation.

Many states and local jurisdictions have their own anti-discrimination laws, and agencies responsible for enforcing those laws (Fair Employment Practices Agencies, or FEPAs). If you file a charge with a FEPA, it will automatically be "dual-filed" with EEOC if federal laws apply. You do not need to file with both agencies.

6 Tips for Managing Portion Size

Eating healthy is about enjoying your food while also managing portion size. Most people eat and drink more than their bodies need especially when they are served larger portions. So, choosing smaller portions to begin with is important for maintaining your overall health and well-being.

Here are some tips to help you manage your portion size:

  1. Measure out 1 cup, 1/2 cup, or 1 ounce of some different foods onto the bowls, glasses, cups, and plates you usually use to see what these portion sizes look like on them.
    • 1/2 cup = light bulb
    • 1 cup = baseball
    • 1 oz. or 2 tbsp. = golf ball
    • 3 oz. of chicken or meat = deck of cards
    • 3 oz. fish = checkbook
  2. Eat you meals on a smaller plate. The smaller your plate, the smaller your portion.
  3. Finished your plate but think you’re still hungry? Wait 10 minutes before going back for seconds. You might not want them after all. If you do go back for seconds, aim for the same balance you had with your first serving and start with veggies.
  4. When ordering at a restaurant, ask for a take-home container as soon as your meal comes. Put half of the meal in the take-home container so you’re sure to let your stomach—instead of your eyes—be your guide. Or share the meal with a dining companion. Many restaurants offer a smaller or “appetizer size” of entrees, so when a smaller portion is available, go for it!
  5. Buy or portion out treats and snacks in small, single-serving bags or packages.
  6. Check out the food label for serving size info

Try This: Small changes like these can make a big difference. Commit to making at least one change to reduce your portion sizes this week.
